Stellantis could give diesel engines a second chance in Europe?

As the automotive industry moves towards 100 % electric vehicles and, failing that, hybrids, the question of the return of diesel engines to the ranges of Stellantis is the talk of the town. According to some rumors, the group could be planning a surprising turnaround: relaunching diesel engines.

The information was first relayed by several French media, quoting Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of Stellantis in Europe. The latter is said to have hinted at the potential reintroduction of the diesel engine in the Group's models, notably on commercial vehicles, but also on some SUV and sedan models.

This new version of the 2.0 HDi engine would be equipped with modern technologies to comply with current environmental standards, while meeting a persistent demand, particularly in European markets where charging infrastructures for electric vehicles are still inadequate.

Initial rumours suggested that the return of diesel engines could concern high-end vehicles such as SUVs or mid-range sedans, and this engine could incorporate light hybrid or plug-in technologies to meet the requirements of new European standards. An idea in line with the current trend, where even improved combustion engines continue to be favored by long-distance drivers.

But let's be cautious. To date, there has been no official statement from Stellantis confirming a strong comeback for diesel in new passenger car ranges. The Group is still concentrating on electric motors, petrol hybrids and plug-in petrol hybrids, and the last official information on the subject concerned adaptation of existing diesel engines to HVO renewable fuelsbut only for models already on the road, such as the Alfa Romeo Tonale 1.6L Diesel or the Fiat Tipo 1.6L Diesel.

Although there is still a demand for diesel engines, particularly in Europe, it's hard to know whether this decision will actually be implemented, or whether it's just a rumor.

  1. There's an all-aluminium 2.2L MultiJet, who cares about an unreliable Peugeot diesel, right? I don't understand the point. Everything from ex-PSA is rubbish, and everyone knows it. Why force the issue again and again?

    • I find you particularly hard on the 2.0 HDi. We're not talking about the DV5/DVR. The DW10 is surely one of the most reliable diesels in its class. Introduced on the 306, it has been continually updated to keep pace with the latest technological advances. PSA, FORD, Mazda, Toyota, Volvo, Suzuki, certain military vehicles and many others have used or are still using it. Its image has been tarnished by the addition of certain anti-pollution devices such as AD-Blue, but this has nothing to do with the engine, which remains solid.

  2. We can't leave diesels behind, they're high-performance and in great demand by motorists. Diesel will be back with synthetic fuels, and electric is just a transition that will never last. We're already seeing it with the drop in sales at Tesla and others. Time will tell.

  3. But what a bunch of liars... when the old boss swore that this was the end of the internal combustion engine, and that automakers who hadn't prepared "for the future" had no one to blame but themselves,
We've now learned of yet another change of heart, and the worst thing is that journalists seem astonished by the situation. Peugeot is about to become a visionary by returning to the diesel that journalists were a little too quick to bury (unlike customers!)...
The automotive world is scary, more and more so...!

Was interessiert da, das Klima.
