The Italian automotive sector is in turmoil following recent announcements by the Minister for Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso. Following reassuring announcements concerning Fiat, with Pandina in production until 2030 and the new 500 Hybridthe Minister tackled the delicate Maserati situation at a new round table with Stellantis and the unions. The Minister affirmed that Maserati would become one of the pillars of Stellantis production on international markets, and detailed several initiatives to strengthen this position.
Adolfo Urso, Minister for Trade and Made in Italy, said, "We have asked that the research and development center be strengthened, that the extraordinary supply chain for related activities be guaranteed, also in the new electric models, and that employment levels, which are important and significant, also be maintained for these plants." Stellantis has confirmed its commitment to investing in research, development and new models. The Minister added: "The situation is less gray, but only time will tell the extent of the commitment announced."
Divided unions
The unions, though mixed, recognized some progress. FISMIC, for example, pointed out that at the meeting between Minister Urso, Stellantis, the Emilia-Romagna region, and the unions, Stellantis has given important assurances. These include the relaunch of the Maserati brand, its complete electrification via the Folgore program, the maintenance of Maserati engineering in Emilia, and the launch of a customization center for all Italian Maserati production at the historic Modena plant.
The search for industrial partners for the Cento plant has also been confirmed, and Stellantis has assured us that production of the 500 hybrid at Mirafiori and the extension of the Panda at Pomigliano will make it possible to maintain production of combustion engines for the Termoli plant until the new Gigafactory starts production.
Ambitious announcements, but doubts remain
Roberto Di Maulo, General Secretary of Fismic Confsal, expressed his appreciation cautious optimism We've done a lot of work, and at last the fog is beginning to lift, even if the international framework, and in particular European legislation, does not yet offer the desired new redefinition that would slow down the frantic race towards the exclusivity of electric motorization and enable a smoother transition."
The announcement of new models in Modena comes as a surprise. At present, only the Maserati MC20, soon to be available in a 100 % Folgore electric version, is planned. According to our information, aan MC20 Stradale should also be unveiled soon. However, the development of internal combustion engines in Modena raises a number of questions. Is this just optimistic rhetoric, or will these promises become reality? with further concrete announcements from Maserati?
As a reminder, Maserati has pushed back its new products with a new roadmap and is in full reflection on the platforms to be used. What happens next will determine the future of the brand.
A long-awaited relaunch
Minister Urso also indicated thata final meeting with all the partners involved will be held in Julyprobably at the Palazzo Chigi, to finalize an agreement to relaunch production in the automotive sector.
Adolfo Urso's initiative and statements show a clear desire to support and develop the Italian automotive industry. However, it remains to be seen whether these announcements will materialize, and only the implementation of these commitments will dispel any doubts.
