Since its launch in 2020, the new-generation electric 500, based on Stellantis' STLA City platform, was initially a great success, supported by purchase incentives in France and Germany. However, when these incentives disappeared, sales dropped significantly. According to our figures, the 500 saw registrations fall from 65,000 in 2023 to just 30,000 in 2024, a decline mainly due to its price, deemed too high by many consumers.
To counter this drop in sales, Fiat decided in the spring of 2024 to relaunch its flagship model with a hybrid combustion version. However, Fiat is not denying its 100 % electric version, which it considers to be the most suitable for the model. Indeed, it is, Almost a year ago, Stellantis announced an investment of 100 million euros. to improve the 500 electric vehicle, with the aim of increasing its range and making it more competitively priced.
Until now, very little official information had been circulating about this upgrade, apart from some speculation about a new battery. It was also widely expected that the new version of the electric 500 would be launched in November 2025, at the same time as the hybrid version. But an unexpected revelation came to light during our interview with Guillaume Clerc, Head of Product at Fiat and Abarth.
In this interview, we were able to obtain exclusive information about the new electric Fiat 500. While this project remains deliberately vague and difficult for Fiat to discuss, some details did emerge. The main investment is in a new battery, which will be produced by the new Stellantis/CATL joint venture in the new Spanish plant. This battery will be of the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type. As a reminder, the current battery comes from Samsung SDI.
What's intriguing, however, is the production date for this battery. It was announced in a press release that the Spanish plant Stellantis/CATL, which will also produce for Opel and Peugeot, will only start manufacturing these new batteries at the end of 2026. Although Guillaume Clerc would not give an exact release date for the new electric Fiat 500, he confirmed that this version will not arrive at the same time as the hybrid version, contrary to what had previously been speculated in numerous media (including italpassion). Fiat has never communicated on a simultaneous launch. While Mr. Clerc declined to give a precise date, this electric version will logically not be launched before the end of 2026, or even early 2027. This information is in line with the Fiat product plan we unveiled a year ago.
Mr. Clerc has confirmed that the new 500 hybrid will aim to boost production at the Mirafiori plant, and at the same time amortize the cost of developing the new 500 electric. If you've been waiting for a more affordable electric Fiat 500 with improved range by the end of 2025, you'll have to be patient. The model could be on the road in around two years' time.
Well, it's not looking good for the electric version until the beginning of 2027, 2 years from now, or we're going to have to significantly lower the price.
Stimmt 👍
Already far too expensive, especially the 23kw version compared to the 600e and the R5, and on top of that their production has to be restarted for the same prices in 2023, even though there's a huge stock that they can't sell.
I'll never buy an electric car! They pollute, they can't be repaired, it's impossible to keep the heating on all night if you're stuck in a snowdrift, it's impossible to go over 200 klm if the air-conditioning is running in summer, it's a disaster coupled with a rip-off.
What if the Grande Panda's battery (42kWh useful, already produced by CATL) ended up under the 500th (currently 37kWh useful)?
It would be nice if they could lower the prices in line with the R5.
I think they will (even if there's already a substantial premium offered by Fiat France), as with the e-208. In the end, the Peugeot with the 136 hp engine is more interesting than the Renault, offering more range, more space on board, a better finish and more comfort. It's just that I find the new design of the bumper outrageous and a failure compared to the original, especially with the false air intakes and grille, which are even bigger than Audi's.
Abarth with ⛽️ petrol engines..... please !
Leave us alone with your bizzzz
We shouldn't be surprised by the drop in sales. Reading the press, you get the impression that everyone's waiting for the electric car, which may be true among Parisian bobo's, but it's high time we realized that this is far from being the case in France, and fortunately so.
3 Owners of fiat 500x / elec / and for me a 500 lounge that has never failed me except the disappointing comfort and screen that is not android .....
I am very disappointed with the price and longevity/kms of the new electric!
I can't wait for the 500 hybrida, hopefully with 85 hp! So I've cancelled my 500 electric project! For the return of the 100% petrol !!!!!!!. Put a battery for the heur to satisfy the EU! Lol
Sacha
I have had a 500e la Prima convertible limited edition now for 4 Year. Having it's first ITV inspection 15th February.
Never had any problems. Range 270 kilometers. Perfect town car.
They supplied a home charger, it gets charged twice a week.
It still looks like brand new,15000 kilometers covered
Den haben wir auch, 0 Probleme, im Sommer gut 300 km

Is the new hybrid a proper full non plug in hybrid or just another basic 500 with an extra little battery?
Ich habe seit Dezember.24 ein E 500 Fiat, läuft perfekt, ein Computer auf 4 Räder.Man gewöhnt sich an das
Aufladen alle 300km, viele l günstiger als Benzin.
The Fiat 500e, with its good range and lower price, will be the best city car on the market. Having had the 500e for several days, I found it very pleasant to drive, well finished, and even luxurious.
Just like the future 500 hybrid, if they boost the 70 hp engine, which will be too little given its heavier weight than the previous generation.
What if they made a more powerful Abarth 500e, before a better range, and a better top speed than the current one (155 km/h)? Then I'd go back to Abarth.
Abarth's managing director indicated that there wasn't enough room under the hood to fit anything other than the 1.0 GSE, which prevented him from making it a true Abarth. As for the arrival of the new battery, Stellantis' visual does indeed indicate 2025.
I agree, it does say Fiat 500e new battery for 2025 on the visual. However, Mr. Clerc told me that it won't be for 2025... communication error?
Or postponing a decision, the group seems to be sailing in the dark... and yet, given the state of sales, falling behind is the last thing to do.
There was no more room under the hood in the old Abarth 595/695, and it was a 1.4 engine!
As the Abarth 500e is a little larger, I don't see why it couldn't be fitted with a hybrid engine larger than 1.0?
