After several months of stoppage due to falling demand, Fiat finally relaunches production of the electric 500 at its famous Mirafiori plant in Turin. January 20 marks an important milestone for the plant, as it slowly but surely restarts at a moderate production rate.
A gradual recovery
Production of the electric Fiat 500, formerly one of the brand's flagship models, resumes smoothly, with only a quarter of the initial production capacity, the plant plans to produce between 140 and 160 vehicles a dayThis is a modest rate compared to what it could achieve in normal times. This slower pace reflects the need to adapt to demand that is still too timid. With this gradual recovery, Fiat therefore plans to produce around 30,000 units of the electric 500 in 2025, a figure that's getting closer of our sales estimates for 2024.
This early resumption of production was endorsed by the trade unions, in particular the Rsa Fiom, which represents the plant's workers. The relaunch of production, albeit timid, is viewed positively as it secures jobs while responding to demand that is beginning to stabilize.
When can we expect a price cut as a temporary solution?
The question now is how to position the electric Fiat 500 on the market. As we mentioned several months agowith a relatively high price tag for a city car, Fiat should consider reducing its price until the new model arrives, which will be equipped with an improved battery.. Such a reduction could boost demand and support higher production levels, particularly in a context of increasing price competition for electric cars.
The Fiat 500e is a perfect city car, very pleasant to drive, but it's far too expensive, and the range of the 95 hp model in particular is too limited.
You have to match the competition's prices to sell!
And it's a real shame that we're so late in understanding that we need a hybrid model.
I agree with Stanislas above, the Fiat 500e is a great car. I live in Montreal, Quebec Canada and it's the perfect car for me, it's fun to drive, comfortable, has a big feel to it sitting high off the road, is easy to park, has great acceleration, lots of nice features (lane Centering, AEB, cruise control, backup camera &sensors, ApplePlay etc) and have had no problems with it in 9 months. Unfortunately I purchased the basic BEV (the Dealer was useless, a hopeless sales person) but would love to get La Prima edition with the extra safety features and better sound system. A battery giving longer range would be fantastic, charge stations are not all reliable in CANADA, they often malfunction so have extra range would reduce dépendance on the flaky charge stations.
What totally baffles me is the advertising for the 500e is negligible. Nothing on TV, newspapers, billboards, zippo. Virtually everyone I talk to says "I didn't know Fiat made an EV."
