Fiat gives itself a few years to become the leader in affordable cars again

Olivier François, CEO Fiat

On the occasion of Fiat's 125th anniversary, Olivier François, the brand's CEO, spoke enthusiastically about the many new products to come over the next few years. After consolidating its "iconic" range with the 500 and 600 models, the Italian brand now aspires to regain its former position in the affordable car segment.

At present, Fiat suffers from a noticeable gap in its offering. Popular models such as the Punto, Bravo and 500L have not been replaced, and the Tipo's range is limited to a few specific regions. The Panda, meanwhile, continues its successful career by default, maintaining the Italian plant's activityfor want of a viable alternative.

Olivier François made this clear a few months ago: "In Europe, I need to replace the Tipo [compact car], the Punto [small car], and we need family offerings like the 500L (small MPV). In Europe, Fiat's offer for families is all but dead. "

To relaunch this affordable range, Fiat is relying on the Smart Car platform (or STLA Smart) from Stellantis. The goal is ambitious: compete with Dacia and Chinese entry-level models. On the occasion of Fiat's 125th anniversary, Olivier François confirmed this offensive, which he calls "Chapter 2". A chapter inspired by the brand's past successes, when its vehicles were marketed and sometimes manufactured in factories spread across Italy, Spain, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Egypt, India and even Korea.

Chapter 2 aims to reclaiming the world with Panda-inspired models: inclusive and simpledesigned for families. New highlights include the new Fiat Grande Pandapositioned between the Punto and the 500L in terms of space.

Within the next two years, Fiat plans to unveil two significant new models. In 2025, a new version of the Fiat Multipla will appear, a C-SUV that is more spacious than the Grande Panda. Then, in 2026, a new compact crossover, the new Tipo, will be launched. All these vehicles will be available in 100 % electric and hybrid-thermal versions, reflecting Fiat's commitment to more sustainable mobility.

    • Well, maybe the idea is to make a ''Panda'' range of accessible vehicles and a ''500'' range of cars more linked to image?

    • Foat will be offering this Fiat Grande Panda 100 hp hybrid for less than 19,000 euros, while a 65 hp Clio is available for almost the same price.

  3. The Fiat 500X hybrid is still on sale in Italy, while it has been withdrawn from the market in France.
    It's a family model, isn't it?

  4. Hopefully, Fiat won't use Peugeot Renault Citroën's pureteck engine. I've still got a Fiat 127 1050cc with 400,834 km, who can beat that.
