While the 2025 season of Formula 1 is about to begin, the Scuderia Ferrari is beginning to reveal the first secrets of its new single-seater, the SF-25or more precisely project 677. While some information is still unclear, hints about the car are already revealing technical details that could make all the difference for Ferrari next year.
An evolving chassis
Under the technical direction of Loïc SerraProject 677 promises many changes, but also some marked departures from the SF-24. The chassis, although already finalized, is currently undergoing intensive dynamic testing to fine-tune the settings for the first authorized test, scheduled for February 19, 2025. The biggest innovation is the adoption of the pull-rod suspension system suspension at the front, a change that took longer than expected to adapt to. This suspension, inspired by the one used by Mercedes, underwent extensive testing to optimize cornering behavior.
The rear of the single-seater, although modified, will retain a certain continuity with the SF-24, but with a slight modification of the chassis to promote more balanced weight distribution. Project 677 will thus offer a improved braking performance and a better handling on slow bendsThese are crucial aspects for circuits with high traction demand.
Aerodynamics... even more aerodynamics
The aerodynamic design will undoubtedly be one of the most visible aspects of the new Ferrari. While the name of the final model has yet to be decided, early indications already reveal a SF-25 radically different from its predecessors. The nose, inspired by the VF-24The result is a more fluid profile for improved airflow.
The sides of the carin particular sidepodsare undergoing a total redesign. The aim is to reduce their volume and height to optimize aerodynamic flow. Ferrari has taken its inspiration from the design of Red BullThis maximizes the efficiency of the airflow to the rear of the car. This maximizes the efficiency of therear fin and diffuser.
Better engine cooling
With regard to the engine, also known as the power unit, Ferrari is focusing on optimizing the cooling. The SF-25's engine should offer gains in terms of decimals of seconds on qualifying lapsa priority for the Scuderia. What's more, thehood aerodynamics has been redesigned to improve heat flowThe 2024 season will focus on this issue. The use of radiators and a more efficient cooling system should enable the Ferrari to cope better with heat and extreme temperatures on the racetrack.
The engineers also reworked the airflow management towards the center of the car, particularly around the suspension arm and cooling zones.
It shares only 1% of its components with the SF-24
The Ferrari SF-25or Project 677, marks a major evolution for the Scuderia. Numerous major modifications were made, some of them, like the pull-rod front suspension and the sidepods reduced. Frédéric Vasseur stated about 1 month ago that this new car will share only 1 % of its components with the SF-24. Note that Loïc Serra, Ferrari's current technical director from Mercedes, only arrived in October 2024. The SF-25 was probably already well advanced when he arrived.
The February 19, 2025 will be the key date on which Ferrari unveils this new single-seater to the world, and all eyes will be on Maranello to see if these promises are fulfilled on the track.
