Stellantis: Italian factory for Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio closed for a few weeks

The situation at the Stellantis plant in Cassino, where Alfa Romeo Giulia, Stelvio and Maserati Grecale models are assembled, is getting even worse. According to several union sources relayed by Milano Finanza, production will be completely shut down on April 18 and will not resume until May 5. A temporary closure confirmed by the manufacturer itself.

A planned closure

Officially, this suspension of production coincides with several public holidays, including Easter and May 1st. But it's hard not to see this as a response to the collapse in demand for models produced at Cassino. In the first quarter of 2025, only 4,655 vehicles rolled off the assembly lines, a drop of 45.5 % compared with 2024. An all-time record... in a bad way.

Giulia, Stelvio, Grecale: sales at half-mast

The breakdown of volumes leaves little doubt as to the seriousness of the situation: around 1,210 Alfa Romeo Giulia, 2,460 Stelvio and 930 Maserati Grecale were produced between January and March 2025. The site is now running at just 10 % of capacity.

While the Stelvio is holding its own, the Giulia seems to be at the end of its industrial life, you will soon no longer be able to buy petrol versions). As for the Grecale, especially in its electric Folgore version, it simply hasn't been produced for several months.

No changeover before 2026

The main concern expressed by the unions is the total absence of transition models. The new electric generations of the Giulia and Stelvio, which will be produced on the STLA Large platform, will not arrive, according to the union, before the second half of 2026. A two-year gap in product planning, no hybrid relay, and no clear visibility on other projects before 2027.

Andrea Di Traglia, secretary of FIOM-CGIL Frosinone-Latina, sounds the alarm: "We're working in a production context that's been historically low since 1972. This first quarter will only include around 36 working days. The situation has reached a very serious alert level".

A catastrophic first quarter in Italy

The first quarter of 2025 was one of the worst on record for Stellantis in Italy: just 109,900 vehicles produced, down 35.5 % on last year. Of this total, passenger cars accounted for just 60,533 units, down 42.5 %.

Meanwhile, Junior is a hit in Poland

Ironically, this crisis only affects Italian factories. The new Alfa Romeo Junior small SUV, produced at Tychy in Poland, has been a real commercial success, to the point of become the brand's new best-seller. This success abroad contrasts sharply with the worrying state of health of the Italian automotive industry.

  1. Dramatic. Almost nothing will be produced in these factories until the next Stelvio and Giulia arrive in the second half of 2026. But how can Alfa Romeo stop production of existing models, when the models that will replace them are not yet ready?
Alfa Romeo shoots itself in the foot.

  6. It's normal that Italians prefer to buy foreign cars at the expense of Italian brands, so don't come crying to me when all the car factories in Italy have closed, except for Ferrari...at the same time, I kind of understand them, no more B segments (like the Punto), no more C segments (e.g. Ritmo), no more D segments (e.g. Croma) at Fiat, and let's not talk about Alfa and Maserati, where it's a complete vacuum!

    • The Fiat 500X and now the Fiat 600 are supposed to replace the C-segment, as there are now only SUVs. The non-replacement of the Punto was a mistake, as was the Tipo, which was stopped and then relaunched with a single engine, making it less interesting.

  8. I've been saying it for years...

They overpriced these models (oh yeah, the Grecale too)....

    How does the saying go...FAFO?

Well...overpriced yourselves, the masses weren't going to warm up them.

Beautiful as they are.... they're overpriced by 10-15k Minimum!
