New Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV: no longer made in Italy, but made in France?

Advertising

Since 2015, Alfa Romeo produces its flagship models in Cassino, Italy, including the Giulia and Stelvio, while the Tonale has been produced in Pomigliano d'Arco since 2022. However, the situation may well change for the future of this SUV. An analysis of product plan presented by Jean-Philippe ImparatoCEO of Stellantis Europe, suggests that tomorrow's Tonale will probably no longer be made in Italy.

Production of the Alfa Romeo Junior in Poland, due to start in 2024, has already sparked off heated debate about keeping production in Italy. Although Alfa Romeo initially reassured that the future Giulia and Stelvio, due in 2026, would be produced in Cassino, recent announcements by Stellantis have cast doubt on the future of Tonale in Italy.

Transition to the STLA Medium platform

After 2026, the Tonale's situation will change. The current model, based on an old Fiat platform, will not be able to evolve into a fully electric version. Stellantis therefore plans to the Tonale 2027 will be replaced by a new model on the STLA Medium platformadapted to 100 % electric vehicles.

Remember that, after the Tonale, there will be either a new Giulietta on STLA Medium or an E-SUV on STLA Large, a new GTV to replace the Opel Manta project.

Where will the new Tonale be produced in 2027?

The product plan for Italian cars, as presented by Imparato, no mention of Tonale production in Italy by 2030. This announcement the question of where the new Tonale 2027 will be manufactured. Among the possible options, several factories in Europe could come into play. One of the most plausible could be the Sochaux plant in Francealready in charge of production of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, two new SUVs which, like the Tonale, are built on the STLA Medium platform. If this hypothesis is confirmed, Sochaux would become a key center for the production of Stellantis' electric SUVs.

In addition to Tonale, the plan produced for Italy up to 2030 makes no provision for no further production of Alfa Romeo models on Italian soilexcept for the future Stelvio and Giulia. This raises questions about the future of car production in this country, which has always been at the heart of Alfa Romeo's DNA. Jean-Philippe Imparato raised the possibility that the Cassino welcomes a new "top di gamma" model between 2027 and 2030But it could also include models from Maserati, such as the Levante, or a large Alfa Romeo SUV on the STLA Large platform.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but at this stage, it seems that the Sochaux plant in France is best suited to production of the Tonale 2027. It is one of the few plants already producing SUVs on the STLA Medium platform, and could well become the European manufacturing center for this model. If nothing is planned for Melfi, another Italian plant will be dedicated to other STLA Meidum models such as the Jeep Compass, Lancia Gamma, DS n°7 and DS n°8, Sochaux therefore seems a logical choice for the future Tonale.

So, although Italy remains an important pillar for Alfa Romeo, the future of Tonale may well lie elsewhere. Let's not forget that, like Italy, French factories need to be reassured with a forecast production decline of 20 % in 2025.

  1. The launch file is very strange. Is it official and up to date?

DS6 CB? (Makes you think the file is obsolete)
    Nothing from Peugeot before 2027?
Nothing from Dodge, Chrysler, Citroën, Maserati
    No more Guilia or Gamma

    • It's old, dating from 2022, and it's several pages long, which is why it doesn't include all the models. For example, in this file, the Junior doesn't yet have a name, and the Grande Panda is called Panda. Product names can be changed almost at the last minute.

So they might as well make the DS 7 and 8 in Sochaux .... French on one side and Italian-American on the other, period.

  3. "TOP DI GAMMA"....!!!😂
Sounds like the name of a pizza, .....That said, a pizzeria run like Alfa-Romeo's would have filed for bankruptcy a long time ago.
Poor Tonale, an ill-conceived failed model and
only the Lancia Epsilon will have a shorter life than his!
Alfa romeo, a slow agony under perfusion,........, who will have the courage to. unplug the patient????

  6. The Tonale made in Sochaux would be an absolute disgrace. I would never buy an Alfa Romeo made on a historic Peugeot site.
Stellantis is a killer of Italian brands.

    • The first thing to do would be to check that there is a successor to the Tonale, because given the current generation's staggering sales levels, business logic would dictate that the board should blow the whistle on this brand, which is incapable of establishing itself in the marketplace.

    • Mulhouse may also be an option. They make Medium like Sochaux, and like Sochaux again, it's a plant that has recently been modernized and has a large production capacity.

I have little faith in Rennes. The plant is on the spot, quite small, and according to CT, when he visited the site to "reassure" the workers, he only mentioned the future C5 Aircross to ensure the future of Rennes. Incidentally, the Melfi plant had recently transferred its old robots to Rennes. Melfi has just been modernized to become like Sochaux and Mulhouse.

      • In general ex FCA platforms are much more modern then ex PSA

What you want to say that Melfi was updated for STLA Medium based SUVs production.

  8. I wonder how J.P. Imparato, who used to talk about the agility of Alfa Romeo cars, is going to manage to keep his promise, starting with the 3008 platform... "I don't want electric cars to detract from the agility of the cars. That's a big challenge. Good luck to the developers. In the same interview, he declared: "I want to preserve the brand's Milanese roots and anchoring. Now that the styling center has been relocated to Turin, I wonder how this statement fits in with the reality of a model assembled in Sochaux...

    • Imparato knows nothing about electrics. How can you say that an electric 100% isn't nimble? A Tesla 3 dual motor beats all Amg, Rs and other M including Alfa QV. Incensé...

      • Surely a 2.5-ton EV, powerful or not, isn't nimble. Even less so when it's an SUV. Tesla managed to stay under two tons with its Model 3 thanks to the massive use of aluminum and the molding of a few large body blocks made possible by technologies from Idra Group, an Italian company. The e-3008 weighs 2.2 tonnes with its 98kWh battery.

  9. We can see the board's strategy: sinking the Italian brands in favor of the French ones. What's happening at Stellantis is a disgrace! And Italy should buy back these brands!

  11. Tonale is unnamed 5th STLA Medium model planned for Melfi.

Giulietta and Delta are slated or Pomigliano on STLA Small.

    And basically that's it.

I don't know why anything should go to France. Since the merger the only side which went partially unscratched is French. Engineering, development and above all supplier base being kept intact.

    • Why not announce the Tonale directly to melfi, then? Or "future project on stla medium"? As for the Lancia delta on stla small, I don't see how they'll do an HF on it. I can also turn your thinking around: why make two DS in Italy?

  12. Totally agree, totally agree. In 2019, FCA group generated up to
130 billion a year business versus 80 billion for PSA, so 3/5 and 2/5 with an undisputed sales advantage in the USA thanks to jeep.the merger of the 2 groups offers a CEO position to Tavarez nonsense for 50/50 they say but in reality since the absence of Marchione there has only been the development of 2 brands Peugeot 70% Citroen 20% opel 5% belonging to PSA and other 5% to FCA and its 6 or 7 brands.a real shame Stellantis is the under appointment of Peugeot and nothing else.No other comments.

  13. Mouais .. Stellantis has been around since 2021! ALfaRomeo's sales have been in freefall since ...2015? In short, the Italians are, as is often the case, ingerates with their own brand and it's clearly not the fault of the latest "savior" ....which I hope will finally put an end to the current charade. Either we make Alfa for everyone, or we stop! Overpriced stuff like the Stelvio at 75,000 euros...ridiculous. In 2021, there will be 55,000 Alfa models on sale worldwide....combining 20 years earlier?
