Alfa Romeo: new information suggests that the 1.6L will be the hybrid engine of future models

Alfa Romeo is currently preparing two highly-anticipated models: the Stelvio and the Giulia, whose electric versions will be launched in 2025 and 2026 respectively. But just as the brand was moving towards an all-electric range, it has been confirmed several months ago by management that hybrid engines will complete the range. While the 100 % electric version will take priority, hybrid-thermal variants will be offered at a later date, and the 100 % electric version will be offered at a later date. it seems that the 1.6L hybrid engine is the one that could power them.

Confirmation of the 1.6L EP6 PHEV engine in future Alfa Romeo models seems only a matter of time. This engine, which was recently confirmed as being in production at the Szentgotthárd plant in Hungarycould be the key to future Stelvio and Giulia models. This engine, produced by Stellantis, will be used in several European and American models, including Jeep's range of hybrid vehicles.

If we still had doubt between the 2.0L GME and 1.6L EP6 enginesone particularly interesting piece of information comes from the United States: a prototype of the Jeep Cherokee, a D-segment SUV based on the STLA Large platform, was spotted. Scheduled for launch in 2025, this model will feature the 1.6L hybrid engine, a decision confirmed by Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa at the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show. This new engine is produced at the Dundee plant in Michiganfollowing a significant investment of $83 million.

The fact that this engine is deployed in a D-segment SUV comparable to the Stelvio, based on the STLA Large platform is no mean feat. It's becoming highly likely that this engine, already in production in Europe, will also be used for Alfa Romeo's future European models, such as the Stelvio and Giulia. While hybrid production of the Jeep Cherokee and the 1.6L hybrid seem to be confirmed, it's becoming increasingly difficult to imagine the GME 2.0L engine being retained.

The 1.6L PHEV engine therefore seems to be the obvious solution chosen by Stellantis for future Alfa Romeo vehicles. This new Cherokee, positioned between the Compass and Grand Cherokee in the Jeep range, will be worth keeping an eye on. What power will the 1.6L offer? With which transmission? The 195 hp of the Peugeot e3008 seems too light, and as far as we know, there is no production of an eDCT gearbox in the USA. To conclude, production of the 1.6L was due to start in 2024 at the Dundee plant, but has been postponed to early 2025. It will initially equip two models, including the new Jeep Cherokee.

  1. Very disappointed by the choice you mention, I can't imagine a 1.6 that is moreover imagined by stellantis under an Alfa Romeo hood. It could just be a deliberate choice to kill off the brand once and for all.
As much as I was waiting to see about the 2-liter, las is already decided.

    • Can you imagine a 1.6L petrol engine under the hood of an X5?

It's ridiculous, they have no limits.

You give them Ferrari, and in 6 months they come out with a 312 Superfast (3 cylinders, 1200cm³)...

  2. Hello

if this information were to be verified, it would not be good news for the future Stelvio.

However, doubt is possible, as the previous Cherokee was not based on a wide platform, but on a front-wheel-drive one.

Maybe the new one will be on STLA Large and will therefore become a rear-wheel drive?

    Time will tell.

    Have a nice day

    • It's especially sad because people will equate the Stelvio with the PureTech, and even if you buy a more powerful internal combustion engine or a 1000hp electric, you'll still have an image of a 3008...

    • The same people to whom we sold 3008s with small 3-cylinder 1.2 engines.

A 1.6 is fine in a compact car. Not in an SUV as big as a Stelvio. What about the mug the mill will pull when the batteries run out?

  4. Until now, the USA has been spared the horrors of the Puretech scandal, so in the interests of uniformity it made sense to take on Jeep and its customers. What a brilliant idea!

  5. It's hopeless to put a 1.6 Stellantis engine in the future Stelvio and Giulia.
One wonders whether Stellantis wants to kill Alfa Romeo, since it is openly stated that some brands could disappear (DS, Lancia, Alfa Romeo).

  7. First of all.
Jeep Cherokee will have a 1.6 turbo HEV and to a PHEV engine.

    Second.
Although Cherokee is on STLA Large it's on a FWD version of it. Yes, there is a FWD version of STLA Large.

    Third.
Giulia and Stelvio will use 2.0 GME.

    • So Jeep made in US will have a French engine and Stelvio made in Italy will have a US Engine? It's hard to understand.

  8. The Stellantis group has no engine worthy of powering an Alfa Romeo, except to help itself to Maserati. Is Alfa Romeo doomed to remain a Peugeot or Citroën clone?
