Alfa Romeo: new SUV to be assembled in the U.S.

Since its launch in 2022, the Tonale has marked the beginning of a new era for Alfa Romeo under the direction of Stellantis. The recent arrival of the Junior SUV in Europe demonstrates the brand's ongoing commitment to enriching its range. After these launches, Alfa Romeo is preparing two other major milestones with the new Stelvio scheduled for 2025 and the new Giulia for 2026. But that's not all. A recent document reveals major changes in the brand's future plans, including assembly of a new SUV in the United States.

As a reminder, in a document we obtained dating back to 2021, Alfa Romeo had announced a new Giulietta on the STLA Medium platform for 2027 and a new Tonale for late 2027/early 2028..

However, a more recent document, published by the cochespias website, reveals significant revisions to these plans. The new Tonale is confirmed for 2027, and the new Giulietta has been replaced by a large electric SUV, "E-CUV EV

Cochespias document dated 2024

The big surprise is that this new E-SUV will be assembled in the United Statesin Detroit's Stellantis plant. This plant, modernized for $900 million in 2019, completed its transformation in 2022 to produce the current Jeep Grand Cherokee. Also scheduled for 2027 and based on the STLA Large platform, the new Grand Cherokee will share this platform with Alfa Romeo's new E-SUV.

This large SUV won't be a first for Alfa Romeo, because such a project had already been envisaged during the FCA era (see the document below showing the sharing of components between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Alfa Romeo E-SUV 964).

However, this time, the plans are more concrete and are clearly aimed at competing with prestigious models such as the BMW iXLotus Eletre and the future electric Porsche Cayenne. This new E-SUV will stand out from its competitors by its reduced height, as Jean-Philippe Imparato assured usCEO of Alfa Romeo. This choice is aimed at improving aerodynamic efficiency and offering a more dynamic design. In comparison, the BMW iX starts at €84,200, while the Lotus Eletre starts at €97,890. Although Alfa Romeo is primarily targeting North America and China with this model, its arrival in Europe remains uncertain.

With these new perspectives, Alfa Romeo continues to strengthen its presence in the SUV market. We'll have to wait until 2028 to see either a new Giulietta or a large Alfetta sedan. Thea roadmap Alfa Romeo has been updated with this new information.

  1. Alfa Romeo, brand of electric SUVs. Decidedly, there will be no choice but to turn away from this brand.
If a future SUV is built in the USA, I don't see the problem, BMW is doing the same thing. Except that it won't have to fly an Italian flag, or the Italian government will get angry.

  2. I'm not mourning the new Giulietta too much, as it would certainly have been a vaguely revamped 308. On the other hand, I'm still worried about the new Giulia: does it exist? will it be a real sedan and not an ersatz Suv? will it have a combustion engine?

    • No, everything has been said (and said several times): technically, to date, it will only be electric, and in terms of exterior design, Imparato has decided to make it an ugly mess like the 408.

      Sorry.

  3. If you want to buy a compact car, what Alfa Romeo has to offer is either the Junior or the Tonale. Otherwise, it's all SUVs, and a new Giulietta that keeps getting delayed. In short, Alfa Romeo is asking its customers to go and see the competition. What a shame.
I'm going to be interested in the new version of the Golf GTI that's about to come out, as I can't find anything to interest me from the Italians.

      • Isn't it bad enough to have rims like Alfa's? 😬
Apart from the Giulia and old Alfa Romeos, how can I be interested in Peugeot bis?
Stellantis is the worst thing that could happen to Italian car brands.

  4. The birth of the last Giulietta was chaotic, and the next one is unlikely to change habits. However, this is still a buoyant segment, with substantial volumes, and we'll have to wait a little longer.

  5. It's true that instead of offering a beautiful, dynamic and exciting compact sedan (to date, there's nothing in the segment, except for 3/4 of the Mazda 3, whose C pillar is a dud), there's nothing better than offering yet another large SUV that will be decent at best with its Giorgio platform. Maybe they'll find new customers, but not loyal ones. As for the design, it won't have anything Italian about it apart from the logo, and even then they're capable of changing it between now and then... The Junior might as well be a Renault or a Nissan.

  6. This is totally lame !!! The brand doesn't represent Alfa Romeo anymore !!! We'll turn to another brand ! We have 2 Alfa but it's over after !

  7. "Junior" = was für eine Enttäuschung, ein Design ??? wie Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota, u.v.a. ein Allerwelts Auto -- auf jeden Fall KEIN Alfa !!!!
Gott sei Dank darf er nicht MILANO heißen !!!
Ich fahre (dem Schicksal sei Dank, einen Tonale)
