If a large sedan Alfa Romeo were to exist, it wouldn't be for tomorrow. In fact, the brand's priorities are currently focused on the launch of other models, such as the Stelvio, Giulia, an E-SUV, a new Tonale (C-SUV), and most likely a C-segment Alfetta. This range, once successfully launched, could pave the way for more daring projects, such as a coupé, a spider or even a large E-segment sedan, but that remains a dream for now.
It's important to note that Alfa Romeo does have a large sedan in the pipeline, with the code name A7S. To date, however, there is no indication that this project is planned for the short or medium term. Indeed, the brand prefers to concentrate on SUV and crossover models, and the future of the large sedan still seems remote.
Yet this is not the first time that a project for a large Alfa Romeo sedan has surfaced. In the past, a model derived from the Giulia had been envisaged under the code name 961. A prototype of this E-segment sedan had even been spotted in 2016, raising hopes of a promising future for this type of vehicle. However, the direction taken by former CEO Sergio Marchionne put an end to this project, mainly due to the disappointing sales of the Giulia and Stelvio, which failed to achieve the hoped-for commercial momentum. The prototype of the Alfa Romeo 961, which should have represented the large sedan, never saw the light of day, and the project was cancelled before the brand could realize its ambitions.
Although this project has been shelved, it's always nice to dream a little. Designer Alessandro Masera, meanwhile, has proposed an interpretation of what a new large Alfa Romeo sedan might look like. Inspired by the elegant lines of the Maserati Granturismo, he imagined a five-door sedan, while retaining the brand's distinctive new design. The front of this sedan is inspired by the new Junior SUV, while the rear would take elements from the light signature of the future Stelvio SUV. A blend of sportiness and luxury that could well embody Alfa Romeo's future in this segment.
Although this large sedan won't be appearing on Stellantis' calendars in the near future, brand enthusiasts continue to hope. With the success of its other models, Alfa Romeo could well surprise us in the years to come. In the meantime, we can continue to dream of what could be the Milanese brand's next great adventure.
