The Alfa Romeo Giulia is the subject of much speculation about its future design. And what if, after more than a year's wait, we were finally starting to get some answers? More than a year ago, we exclusively revealed that the Giulia would not remain a classic sedan. In fact, the Giulia is said to have a fastback design, a choice that comes as a surprise but seems to be increasingly confirmed. This information has been revealed by two reliable sources, one of whom told us, some two years ago, that the Giulia project he had seen on the Internet was a fastback. was closer to a Peugeot 408 design: a fastback crossover sedan.
This hybrid design, halfway between a traditional sedan and an SUV, now seems to be taking shape, but with important nuances. About two months ago, the CEO ofAlfa RomeoSanto Ficili, has officially confirmed to our colleagues at L'Argus that the Giulia will adopt "a new design and a new type of bodywork". A statement that further fuels speculation, especially as the model's platform will be the same as that of the Stelvio. He added: "Its platform will be the same as that of the Stelvio. So you can imagine what kind of vehicle we're going to offer.
This new direction seems to be a compromise between the need to offer a more versatile vehicle and the desire to preserve the Giulia's heritage. However, while some observers believe that the need for a crossover could be linked to the need to integrate a 100 kWh batterya must for an all-electric Giulia Quadrifoglio. However, after recent revelations, it seems that the 1000 hp electric version will not see the light of day after all.
This raises an important question: is the need for a gigantic battery, like the Dodge Charger EV with its 100.5 kWh, becoming obsolete? To add to the confusion, our source, who had revealed the Giulia's styling information to us in a preview, recently gave us some fresh news. According to the company, although the initial plan for the two-year-old Giulia seemed definitively oriented towards a fastback crossover silhouette in the style of the Peugeot 408, the latest information points to a model that would be closer to a sedan, while remaining slightly modified from the current Giulia.
It's getting hard to keep up, but it looks like the Giulia won't be straying too far from its roots. The latest photos of the future Stelvio reveal a vehicle longer than the current Stelvio. And since the Giulia is due out the same year, 2026, it's reasonable to assume that it will adopt similar styling, but with adjustments to make it a lower-slung model.
If the Giulia is similar in design to the Stelvio, it should be a little higher than the current Giulia, but lower than the Peugeot 408. A ground clearance close to that of the DS N°8 could then be expected. It's important to remember that the DS N°8 does not share the same platform.
Height | Ground clearance | |
---|---|---|
Alfa Romeo Giulia (2015) | 1,43 m | 15.2 cm |
Alfa Romeo Stelvio (2016) | 1,63 m | 20 cm |
DS N°8 | 1,58 m | 15.5 cm |
Peugeot 408 | 1,48 m | 19 cm |
If the Stelvio has a fastback line, and the Giulia is raised with a fastback profile... would we have the same car with only 10cm difference in height? What's the point?
PS: I find the 408 clownish.
Today's Giulia and Stelvio share the same platform and don't have the same profile at all. So Santo Ficili's statement doesn't add up to much. On the other hand, the Stelvio's driving position is very similar to that of a sedan, a point of great importance (the Tonale didn't really convince us in this respect). The next question is ground clearance. Once again, a lower car means better management of body movements and greater comfort. And more efficiency for an EV. I'm guessing that's what's behind the "fastback" line.
So beautiful and aggressive as a sedan that it would be a waste to redesign it as a suv "like everyone else".
