Just over a year ago, our Italpassion website exclusively revealed that the next generation of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, codenamed 953, would depart from the traditional three-box sedan and adopt a radically new design. Far from the standards of the classic sedan we know, the future Giulia would offer a hatchback trunk, a fastback profile that brings the car closer to SUV codes. An announcement that seemed audacious at the time, but has now been confirmed by Santo Ficili, CEO ofAlfa Romeo.

A year ago, when attention was focused on the brand's future models, in particular the Milano SUV that had become Junior, our site had already obtained exclusive information on the future Giulia. The 953 model would no longer be a classic sedan, but a hatchback, a crossover between sedan and SUV. An increasingly trendy design, like the Peugeot 408. Perhaps this is the answer to all those who have been waiting for the Giulia SW.

Confirmation came this week directly from Santo Ficili, CEO of Alfa Romeo. In an interview with L'Argus, Ficili declared that the future Giulia will indeed adopt "a new design and a new type of bodywork".. The positioning of the Giulia which, according to Ficili, will take on a "more crossover style". In other words, the sedan will give way to a vehicle with more SUV styling, which, according to the CEO, seems perfectly in tune with consumer expectations.

A technical reminder, the future Giulia will be built on the new STLA Large platformThe Giulia will therefore share neither the platform nor the electric powertrain of the Peugeot 408. But the presentation of the Giulia is still a long way off, scheduled for just over a year from now. Instead, all eyes are on the new Stelvio SUV, which will inaugurate the STLA Large platform in Europe, STLA Brain technology, new electric motors and more.

Finally, it should be noted that a month ago, we also revealed that another feature of the future Giulia could be the return of the off-center license plateThe Junior and the future Stelvio have and will have a centered license plate. We'll see if this new information is confirmed.

  1. Only SUVs in the range, transforming the only sedan (and the most beautiful in the segment) into a crossover is nonsense.

Especially since the 408 and C5X were failures. The same will be true of the future DS N°8.

  2. BMW can sustain to manufacture and sell sedans, wagons and coupes, but greedy beancounters from FIAT-Stellantis prepared to bury Alfa with SUVs only.

  3. The trend made in PSA is to crossover everything, with the success we know: Cactus, C3L, DS3CB, C4X, 408... Let's see what the DS8, Gamma, Guilia come up with... At least we escaped the Quattroporte 2025, which was supposed to be a fastback too! Let's hope that the new model (2028) adopts a more traditional architecture.

  5. I'm very disappointed by what I've just read, it's incredible that people who think they're competent in the automotive industry react like sheep in a trap, the one who wants a two-volume car buys a station wagon, but why deprive the one who wants a respectable sedan of this possibility. I think they'll regret it the day they do the math, but that'll be too late.

  7. Oh nein. Nicht noch ein SUV-ähnlich verschnittenes Auto mehr! Schade, eine neue stilvolle Limousine würde der design-schwachen SUV Landschaft doch gut tun?

  9. You're going to have to buy used Giulias, because the future crossover model, electric or with a Peugeot 1.6 hybrid engine, no thanks.

  11. Ugh... what is the world's obsession with Trucks??? Few, if anyone uses these SUV's to go off-road. What happened to the thrill of/and control that you get from a lower vehicle that hugs the road?
Another point; Since SUV's and trucks produce more carbon emissions than cars, one would think that manufacturers would look to go in the opposite direction.
I have a standard Giulia and my husband has a Stelio. Tbh, my vehicle is a lot more fun to drive.

  12. What a shame this is, particularly when AR already offer a range of SUVs. A stylish sedan, with sportwagon and hot versions are really what a true Alfa fan would want and they have been the fundamental underpinning of the brand for more than 2 maybe 3 decades. This is sad news

  15. Once again Alfa Romeo must conform to the Stellantis/Tavares standards where models must have a major % of interchangeable parts with Stellantis "other" brands, now the Giulia must conform to the latest Peugeot/DS/Lancia models in order to save costs, with some plastic bits and pieces stuck on the front and rear of the vehicles to make the "look" like Alfa Romoe's - the so called "Junior" is just a rehashed Jeep Avenger with many Peugeot inter changeable parts - no wonder it got no where in the European Car of the Year competition - such a shame that Stellantis has destroyed a once great brand. My feeling, CULL the brand and retire it to history as a gross failure by Stellantis

  16. So the Giulia is getting turned into a crossover.

Ouch. Hopefully this was a Tavares decision that poor Alfa can't simply just cancel.

  17. Yet another "peugeotesque" cloning! [editor's note: a contraction of Peugeot and grotesque]. Between the 408 and the new DS, pompously named "DS number 8", we can once again fear the worst!
Unfortunately, this is only half a surprise. Not to mention the choice of powertrain, probably thermal/hybrid in addition to electric. It has just been announced that Alfa is abandoning the "all-electric" concept - Tavarès' notoriously ill-conceived plan! We still remember the fiery speeches made by his henchmen not so long ago when this strategic plan was announced! :-))
As for all the group's brands, the calamitous management of the "Puretech" dossier could discourage many from signing a STELLANTIS purchase order. I don't think that the design and the chutzpah of our sales and marketing staff will be enough to boost sales. To be continued...

  19. I'll treasure my Giulia in the garage, because nothing beats the elegant styling of a 3-box sedan. We'll come back to it later.

  20. Bad decision Giulia is known for sports model, to make it another SUV or so called Crossover won't get you any sales except losses. Poor marketing just keeps on going. I can't believe the upper management can't figure out why sales are down in the USA. You need to hire new marketing manager. With my Giulia a had to drive two and a half hours for servicing the car, right there is your problem!!!!. It is a simple management decision to change that and here is the Answer make it possible for every Dodge dealer to be able to service and sell Alfa Romeo.

  21. What a stupid idea, who wants a cross over. The whole point of a sports sedan it to get that driving experience which you will not get with a crossover.
I certainly will not be buying one. I stick with my giulia veloce sedan thank you very much.
    OK rant over.

  23. アルファロメオはブランドとしての存在価値を自ら捨て続けている。2015年に発売されたジュリアが最後の光だったのだろう。ジープやプジョーにアルファの紋章を付け替えただけの車など我々には必要ない。
